Exploring Las Vegas: A journey through the strip

Paris Hotel Las Vegas

Las Vegas is a dazzling oasis of entertainment and excitement, and my recent trip to this iconic city was a real experience. From the grandiose hotels to the eclectic dining options, there’s so much to experience.

Overall I love visiting the US, it’s certainly my kind of place overall, but I do have to admit that Las Vegas did provide a bit of a shock. On top of being dazzled by it, it also has a negative side - it’s hot, it's very busy, yes you smell weed being smoked and it can be dirty in places. Another issue I faced (although not too bad) is that hotel rooms are not well cleaned. My advice here - pay a little extra to get a good hotel. It won't be perfect because poor sanitation is a big issue at hotels in Las Vegas, but that little extra often helps.

Regardless of that, the trip to Vegas is something I’ll always remember. I did not really go out of my way to book any shows or other events, but just wandered around. So I will certainly have missed some of its highlights. I did not go to Vegas to gamble, but to experience its vibe.

I had my teenage kids with me on this trip, which was part of a larger roadtrip, so my first priority was to ensure we had a more family friendly location to stay at.

Hilton Grand Vacations: A family-friendly retreat

As for accommodations, the Hilton Grand Vacations on the Strip proved to be an excellent choice. What I loved about this hotel was that it offers a family-friendly environment without the casino hustle and bustle. The property features a nice pool area that’s perfect for both relaxation and fun, and the spacious rooms made it easy for my family to unwind after a busy day exploring the city. It was a welcome respite to return to a place where the focus is on relaxation and enjoyment rather than gaming. There were no gambling machines or facilities on the property and a small shop with some food options provided a good alternative if you don’t want to head back to the strip in the evening.

In terms of what we visited, you will find an overview below. We were there for about 2 full days. I did not include some temporary exhibitions as I’m not sure they are still there today.

The Venetian shopping zone

The Venetian

One of the first stops was the Venetian, known for its Venice themed shopping and dining zone. Like many places in Las Vegas you are immersed in an amazing world, this time in a Venice style environment that is simply impressive and a must see when you visit Vegas. Apart from getting out of the blistering sun, it’s an absolutely amazing bit of (re-)construction, with copies of Venetian fountains and it even has its own canals where you can take a trip on an authentic gondola.

Take the time just to wander and enjoy it!

The Majesty of Caesars Palace

Ceasar's Palace

Caesar’s Palace is a veritable icon of Las Vegas. Walking through the Forum Shops, I felt like I was transported to an ancient Roman marketplace with its impressive architecture and elaborate decor. The shopping here is top-notch, and there are plenty of stores (including some pretty expensive ones) to browse. Plus, the atmosphere is electric, with a blend of history and modern luxury that makes it a must-see on the Strip. Like many casinos in Vegas, it also has a wealth of dining options including (and depending on your budget): 3

  • Nobu: A world-renowned name in Japanese cuisine, Nobu at Caesars Palace offers an exquisite dining experience with a menu featuring fresh sushi, sashimi, and innovative Japanese dishes.

  • Mastros Ocean Club: For those who enjoy seafood, Mastro's Ocean Club provides a luxurious atmosphere with a menu focused on high-quality seafood and steaks.

  • Bacchanal Buffet: If you’re in the mood for variety, the Bacchanal Buffet is a must-visit. This sprawling buffet offers an extensive selection of dishes, from international cuisine to traditional comfort food. It’s a great spot for those who want to sample a little bit of everything in a lavish setting.

  • Serendipity 3: For a more casual dining experience, Serendipity 3 offers a fun atmosphere and a menu filled with American comfort food. Their famous frozen hot chocolate and over-the-top desserts make it a great spot for a sweet treat.

Check out Ceasar’s Palace website for more restaurants.

Madame Tussauds: A Star-Studded Experience

For a touch of celebrity glamor, Madame Tussauds was an unexpected highlight of the trip. This wax museum brings you face-to-face with lifelike figures of your favorite stars.

LINQ Promenade

A recent addition to the Strip that’s worth a visit is the LINQ promenade. This vibrant area features a variety of shops and eateries, offering a refreshing change of pace from the more established venues. It’s a nice break away from the madness of the Strip.

Flamingos at The Flamingo

No trip to Las Vegas is complete without a visit to The Flamingo, especially if you’re a fan of wildlife. The Flamingo’s habitat is home to a beautiful collection of flamingos and other exotic birds. Wandering through the lush gardens and watching these vibrant creatures was a serene escape from the bustling city.

Dining at Gordon Ramsay’s Burger Restaurant

Food is a major part of any Vegas experience, and dining at Gordon Ramsay’s Burger restaurant was a delight. It’s well worth going to. You can go without a reservation but I recommend getting one online so you don't have to wait your turn.

Of course there is a lot we did not do in Las Vegas, so take the time to research it and define your own plan!

Here are some tips and advice - things that I learned - for first time visitors.

How to get around Vegas?

Like in many US cities catching an Uber is the best way to get around. You will do plenty of walking when you are in the central area of the strip and the weather is very hot, so don't be shy and catch an Uber or other ride sharing service. The strip is very long!

Which hotels do I recommend in Vegas?

I only stayed at the Hilton Grand Resort, so I’m probably not the best person to ask, but book with care. Cheap is not always a guarantee to good hotels and service. Vegas is infamous for its poor quality hotel rooms, so shop around and inform yourself (Youtube is often a good base for this, lots of Youtubers have gone to Vegas and done reviews). A fancy and famous casino/hotel is not always a guarantee!

How far away are hotels on the Strip from the airport?

Las Vegas airport is very close to the Strip, so cab rides/Ubers are about 10 to 15 minutes.

Is Las Vegas safe?

This is a little more complicated. Like many US cities there are varying levels of safety depending on where you are. I was advised by an Uber driver that the Strip (starting at Sahara and ending at the famous Vegas sign is generally safe. There is a lot of private security there too. I was recommended to not veer off the Strip as you quickly end up in less safe areas.

Is it very hot in Vegas?

Well, yes. It’s in the middle of a desert, so heat is a risk factor. It’s also why you will find a lot of extensive indoor facilities in this city. Try to stay out of the heat as much as possible, use sun lotion, take water with you and wear a hat. Check the weather before leaving the hotel in the morning.
